It is also more faithful as a whole to the Broadway original, though at a running time of 90 minutes it leaves out most of the historical context of the FDR administration as well as some of Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin's familiar songs, and makes a few plot changes, some of which work and some of which don't. Because of the omissions, this probably isn't a definitive film translation of Annie, but it's well paced for a young audience, and would be an excellent introduction to get children interested in live theater. Annie was produced by the team behind the 1993 telecast of Gypsy with Bette Midler, as well as 1997's Brandy-Whitne! y Houston Cinderella, and there are plans for many othe! rs. With the help of a trainer, former hopeful Tommy (James Colby), she begins to learn how to box and gain self-esteem. Tommy sees Patty's rage and tries to help her channel it in the ring. Patty learns a valuable lesson-the difference between fighting and boxing. When you fight, you lose. When you box, you win! As Patty's talents grow stronger so does her relationship ! with Tommy. In the end, Patty earns the self-confidence to stand up for what she believes in, the power to take control of her life and make it her own. French hottie Julie Du Page has the title role in Lady Jayne: Killer, as an assassin who wears brightly colored thong underwear--which she strips down to when she does her hits. After she takes a suitcase carrying a million dollars from a mob boss, she hits the road with a single mom (Erika Eleniak from Baywatch) and her son who are themselves on the run. The ridiculous plot isn't worth recounting because no one watches a babe-with-guns movie for the story (and certainly not for the truly atrocious dialogue). Unfortunately, Lady Jayne: Killer falls woefully short on skin and action--the modestly titillating scenes are few and you can find better shootouts on television. For some films, walking the fine line between sublime and silly becomes an entertainment in itself, and such is the ca! se with I Am Love, Luca Guadagnino's lush drama set within an Italian business dynasty in Milan. We see much of the film from the perspective of an outsider who has nevertheless fitted herself into this aristocratic world for many years: Emma, the Russian-born wife of the textile company's new CEO. She's played by Tilda Swinton, whose customarily penetrating work is enhanced by her speaking Russian and Italian (how does she do it?). The Russian heritage might be a tip-off--Emma could have a touch of Anna Karenina about her--because she embarks on a grand affair with a much younger man. The many levels of melodrama play out against gorgeous exteriors and wildly overdressed interiors, as though Guadagnino looked back through Italian film heritage and decided it was time for someone to out-do the opulent visions of Luchino Visconti. Adding to the strong flavor of high aestheticism is the soundtrack, which uses various excerpts of pieces by the great contemporary compose! r John Adams, to evocative effect (the opening shots of snowed! -over Mi lan buildings are spellbinding). But let's not forget about the silly: one can concede the movie's usefulness as eye candy while noting that there is something fundamentally pretentious and overheated about it all, a designer's vision of storytelling. I Am Love overshoots the sublime by a wide margin, but it's fun to consume. --Robert Horton
